Friday April 30th - Day 3

As we rolled out of the shed to start day 3, Kevin Bartlett came over and leaned in the window. "What happened to you guys yesterday, on the Derby stage?" he asked. "Did you have some kind of problem, miss a gear or something? How come I got past you so quickly?" I wish I had some excuse, but I had to admit to him that I was driving as fast as I could. Still, we were impressed that we had been spoken to by somebody famous.

The targas for the day took us to some magnificent scenery south of Hobart. Despite being a native, I had not previously seen many of the roads we travelled, and was constantly awed by the magnificent scenery. The day saw us miss several targa stages by significant margins, and yet I regarded it as the most enjoyable day thus far. My driving was steadily improving, with the feeling that I was getting much faster yet in a much more controlled way than I had been on the first day. The day was notable for the bad crash of a well-known Porsche driver, who is still in hospital several weeks after the event. As we toured past the crane winching the almost unidentifiable wreck from over a bank, it was a sobering reminder that what we were doing was not just a game where you can count on going home safely at the end of the day.

On to Day 4...
